On Friday, members of the Nigeria Police Force brought a businessman by the name of King Dauda, who is 53 years old, before a Kado Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja for allegedly stealing the sum of N92,300 from a sex worker.

The accused thief was identified as Dauda, who lives in EFAB Global Estate, Life Camp, Abuja.

However, the defendant entered a plea of not guilty to the charge against them.

Stanley Nwafoaku, the Counsel for the Prosecution, testified in front of the court that on May 26, at approximately 9:05 in the morning, Ms. Bolaji Olufumi, a resident of Prosper Road Area 3, Abuja, filed a report regarding the incident at the Life Camp Police Station.

According to Nwafoaku, on May 20, the defendant invited the complainant to his home, which was located in the EFAB Estate, and after having carnal knowledge of her, he stole her purse, which contained N92,300. Nwafoaku said this happened after the defendant had invited the complainant to his home.

According to him, Olufumi did everything in her power to get the purse and the money back from the defendant, but she was unsuccessful.

According to Nwafoaku, the offence violates the regulations that are outlined in Section 288 of the Penal Code Law.

Charity Nwosu, the Defence Counsel, made an oral application for bail, citing Section 36 of the Constitution of 1999 (in its amended form) and Section 158 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), 2015.

Nwosu gave the judge his word that the defendant would not flee the jurisdiction if he was granted bail.

Nwafoaku, on the other hand, did not raise any objections to the defence counsel’s request that the defendant be released on bail.

The court’s decision to release the defendant on bail was made by Judge Mohammed Wakili, who set the amount at N100,000 and required one surety to post the same amount.

According to Wakili, the surety is required to provide a print out of their Bank Verification Number (BVN), a recent photograph from their passport, and a valid identification card, all of which must be verified by the court registrar.

After that, the judge decided to postpone the hearing of the case until the 15th of June.
