According to reports, Senator Ahmad Lawan, the outgoing president of the Senate, has spoken with Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu about his successor.
Leadership Newspaper claims that Lawan urged Tinubu to revoke his initial support for former Senate minority leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio.
At the conclusion of his meeting with the legislative delegation led by Ahmad Lawan, Politics Nigeria learned that Tinubu’s widely reported support for the former minister of Niger Delta Affairs had been abandoned.
Lawan, who was reportedly present at the meeting with some senators-elect and ranking senators, made it clear to Tinubu that Akpabio would not win the Senate as a result of his endorsement.
Lawan claimed that Akpabio would be challenging to market for the desired Senate position because he was “bogged down by credibility baggage, which disqualified him from the contest.”

According to reports, the senators were upset with how the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) was run while Akpabio served as the overseeing minister of the interventionist organisation for the oil-rich region.
Further information revealed that the senators were especially enraged by Akpabio’s alleged efforts to obstruct the appointment of the board and management that had been duly selected, screened, and confirmed by the Senate on November 5, 2019.
Akpabio is one of the leading candidates running under the All Progressives Congress (APC) banner for Senate President of the 10th Assembly. Others include Dave Umahi, the departing governor of Ebonyi State, and Adams Oshiomhole, the former national chairman of the APC and senator-elect for Edo North.
