INEC to publish names of candidates for governorship elections in Bayelsa, Imo, Kogi

The Independent National Electoral Commission announced that the list and personal information of candidates for the governorship elections in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi State will be released on Friday.

This was said in a statement released on Thursday and signed by Festus Okoye, National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee.

 

The statement claims that 17 political parties nominated candidates for Bayelsa and Imo States and all 18 political parties done so for the Kogi Governorship election.

“Nigerians may recall that on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, the Commission released the timetable and schedule of activities for the three off-cycle Governorship elections in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi states held on Saturday, November 11, 2023,” the statement said.

Political parties carried out their primary elections in accordance with the law, and by the deadline of 6 p.m. on May 5, 2023, they had uploaded the names and biographical information of both their candidates and running mates to the INEC candidate nomination portal.

“All political parties supporting candidates in the three elections have filed duly completed Forms EC9 including personal information backed by sworn affidavits as well as EC9B containing the names of their candidates.

The Commission shall publish the personal information of the candidates in the State Headquarters and Local Government offices in the three states on Friday, May 12, 2023, in accordance with section 29(3) of the Electoral Act 2022.

“We urge Nigerians to carefully review the list. In specifically, section 29(5) of the Electoral Act 2022 allows any candidate who took part in their party’s primary and has good reason to suspect that the information provided by the candidate is incorrect to contest the nomination at the Federal High Court.
