Nigerian conjoined twins successfully separated by Saudi surgeons

In implementation of directives of King Salman, Nigerian conjoined twins Hassana and Hasina underwent separation surgery by a medical team of 35 specialists in Riyadh

Hassanah and Hasina, conjoined twins from Nigeria, were successfully separated after a 14-hour procedure in Saudi Arabia.

Hassana and Hassina, who were both born in Kaduna on January 12, 2022, shared the same pelvis, liver, intestines, abdomen, and reproductive and urinary systems.

 

At the King Abdullah Specialist Hospital for Children in King Abdulaziz Medical City, an 85-member specialized medical team successfully completed seven of the eight stages of the procedure, according to Arab News.

On November 9, 2022, the King approved the airlift of the conjoined twins and their parents to Riyadh in order to conduct their separation at the expense of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The supervisor-general of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center and the head of the surgical team, Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, announced the operation’s eight stages before it even started. He is a consultant to the Saudi Royal Court.

Yahaya Lawal, the ambassador of Nigeria to Saudi Arabia, thanked the monarchy’s authorities for their thoughtful humanitarian gesture toward these conjoined twins.
