13 members of the academic and non-academic staff at Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma, Edo State, have been fired by the administration for offenses that include allegedly lying about their age, committing financial fraud, engaging in gross misconduct, extortion, and sexual harassment.
The University Staff Disciplinary Committee recommended that the alleged erring staff members’ employment be terminated after finding them guilty of the offenses, according to Prof. Asomwan Adagbonyin, the institution’s acting vice chancellor.
Adagbonyin revealed this on Monday in Benin City while delivering the committee’s report to the chairman, Engr. Andrew Olotu, and members of the AAU Special Intervention Team.
The affected employees, according to the VC, come from the faculties of basic medical science, medical laboratory sciences, nursing, engineering, law, and political science, as well as the former director of the university farm.
He stated that the affected employees received a fair hearing from the disciplinary committee, which also suggested that “the criminal aspect of the disengage staff offence should be reported to security operatives.”
According to Prof. Adagbonyin, a lecturer who was the head of nursing science was recommended for dismissal after being found guilty of demanding N32,000 and N52,000 from two students. She also said that a lecturer who was accused of sexual harassment was also fired.
The lecturer had claimed to have only made advances, but he went to the girl’s church to ask for forgiveness, the speaker claimed. The victim is now safe and has been transferred to a different lecturer.
