Plateau gov condemns killing of pastor, 20 others

In Riyom and Barkin Ladi Local Government Areas of Plateau State, suspected gunmen killed Rev. Nicodemus Kim of the Church of Christ in Nation along with 20 other people.

The pastor was assassinated in the Gana-Ropp town of Barkin Ladi, according to a statement released on Tuesday in Jos by the national publicity secretary of the Berom Youth Movement, a socio-cultural organisation, Mr. Rwang Tengwong. Other victims were slaughtered in the Rim, Jol, and Kwi communities of Riyom.

Tengwong claims that simultaneous, well-planned attacks targeted the villages.

Twenty-one people were killed and a number of others were hurt on Sunday as a result of coordinated militia attacks against members of the Rim, Jol, and Kwi communities in Riyom as well as the Gana-Ropp hamlet in Barkin Ladi, the speaker claimed.

“Two people died in Rim, seven at Jol, and eleven at Kwi, all in Riyom, while Rev. Nicodemus Kim, a clergyman, died in Gana-Ropp, Barkin Ladi.

Tengwong urged the security forces and the government to come up with long-term solutions to the recent attacks and homicides in local areas.

The BYM, under the direction of Solomon Mwantiri, hereby denounces the planned attacks and other provocations committed against defenceless individuals on the Plateau since the general elections of 2023.

“We demand that the incoming administration develop fresh approaches to deal with the security situation around the nation, but especially in the Plateau.

“Security staff must also become aware of their legal obligations to protect people and property.”

It was impossible to reach DSP Alabo Alfred, the state command’s police public relations officer, for comment.

However, the state governor, Mr. Caleb Mutfwang, confirmed the killings in a statement by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Mr. Gyang Bere.

The governor added to his earlier confirmation of the abduction of a traditional leader in Mushere, Bokkos LGA.
