Niamey, Republic of the Niger The leader of the Niger Republic coup has given the French ambassador, Sylvain Itte, 48 hours to leave the country. According to Reuters, the foreign ministry announced this in a statement on Friday, August 25.
According to the statement, Itte’s refusal to accept a meeting invitation from the Nigeran minister of foreign affairs contributed to the decision. It went on to add that other actions made by the French administration were also detrimental to Niger’s interests without providing any further details. France has sought President Mohamed Bazoum’s return as the head of the Niger Republic following the historic coup on July 26.
When contacted for comment on Friday, the French foreign ministry did not respond right away.
The African Union reportedly suspended the Republic of Niger as a result of Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani’s coup in Niger on Wednesday, July 26. The ban is one of the several sanctions imposed on the nation of francophone West Africa.
A military alliance between Niger and two nations The military juntas of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso are working together. According to DW, the head of the junta and a former commander of the brigade guard, General Abdourahamane Tiani, overthrew President Mohamed Bazoum and imprisoned him.
