On Tuesday, September 5, 2023, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) would start a two-day warning strike in protest of what it described the government’s failure to adequately offset the effects of the withdrawal of subsidies on Premium Motor Spirit, also known as fuel.
Speaking about resolutions from the NLC National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting the day before at a press conference at Labour House in Abuja, NLC President Joe Ajaero made the announcement on Friday.
Earlier in August, the labour centre planned a nationwide protest against actions it perceived as “anti-poor” by the Bola Tinubu administration against Nigerians.
President Tinubu withdrew the subsidy on May 29, 2023, during his inauguration speech, increasing the price of PMS to N610 per litre. The rise in fuel prices eventually led to an increase in cost of living.
Although committees were established by the Tinubu administration to organise the distribution of palliatives to workers, the labour centre noticed that the committees had not yet developed any plans.
