The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has removed Rabiu Kwankwaso, its 2023 presidential candidate, for refusing to appear before the party’s disciplinary committee.

Kwankwaso’s expulsion is effective right away, according to the NNPP’s National Executive Committee.

This information was released in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos by Abdulsalam Abdulrasaq, the NNPP’s acting national publicity secretary.

At its National Convention on August 29 in Lagos, the NNPP had already suspended Kwankwaso for egregious anti-party actions and improper handling of campaign finances.

After suspending him, the party’s National Executive Council established a disciplinary committee, and Kwankwaso was invited with the warning that he would be expelled if he did not show up and explain himself.

According to a statement from Abdulrasaq, “The NEC met in an emergency session on Friday, September 1, and decided to:

Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is hereby dismissed from the NNPP with immediate effect because he refused to show up before the disciplinary committee on Thursday, August 31, despite being formally invited in writing.

“That Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the formerly running for president, will be reported to appropriate quarters to answer questions on financial irregularity related to mismanagement of public funds.”

According to reports, the NNPP crisis started on August 24 when the party’s leadership that was supportive of Kwankwaso declared the suspension of the organization’s founder, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, and the national publicity secretary, Dr. Agbo Major.
