The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) leadership has been accused of a “grand plot” to “destabilise” the country.
The alert was raised by the Civil Society Situation Room on Good Governance in Nigeria (CSSR-GGN) at a recent news conference in Abuja.
Co-signing a statement released by the organisation, Dr. Thomas Terna Uzah, executive director and national convener, claimed that the NLC is “being sponsored by the opposition to cause chaos.”
The organisation further claimed that the workers union “has already been mobilised with $5 million” in order to implement its strategy.
In an interview with Guardian, the group stated, “Despite these stark realities and the dangers of reinstating subsidies, which will collapse the economy and create intractable distortions, it is shocking that NLC is leading and coordinating other groups to sabotage the federal government.”
Although the NLC is still adamant about going on strike, it is notable that the administration has spoken with the organization’s leadership about methods to meet its objectives. This made us think that the union might not be telling Nigerians the whole truth about the true reason behind its industrial action.
We don’t want to be taken by surprise, so we want to be clear to NLC that we challenge them to an ongoing strike. In order to protect Nigerians from the agony they want to inflict upon the country, the Nigerian Civil Society Situation Room will take all necessary measures.
More detailed details about the NLC’s dealings with the opposition and, sadly, some foreign interests are becoming available. We would make these details available to Nigerians upon request.
Therefore, the CSOs begged “all well-meaning Nigerians, particularly the youth, not to allow themselves to be used as cannon fodder” in order to fulfil some people’s narrow purpose.
According to NLC President Joe Ajaero, the organization’s proposals for a nationwide strike are the result of President Tinubu’s government’s refusal to comply after the petrol subsidy was eliminated.
Nothing has been achieved in relation to items one through seven. That is the ultimate in indifference. Speaking to AriseTV, Ajaero declared, “We are in an emergency; asking for more time is a crime.”
