On Monday, the Niger State police command unveiled Yahaya Mohammed, a vigilante, who was accused of murdering a commercial motorbike rider and stealing his bike.
Mohammed was shown in a parade with thirty-seven other individuals who were reportedly engaged in different types of illegal activity.
Before bringing the defendants to court, Abiodun Wasiu, the command’s spokesperson, stated that an investigation was still underway to determine the specifics of the crime.
Police were notified of a dead corpse in the Shabalile neighborhood of Mokwa with a cut throat and a puddle of blood surrounding it. The body was removed from the site and sent to the hospital morgue by police officers under the direction of DPO Mokwa Division.
As part of the inquiry, a Bajaj motorbike thought to have been stolen from the dead was found in an unfinished structure in Mokwa on February 10, 2023, at about 11:30 a.m. Additionally, Usman Yahaya Muhammad, a 20-year-old resident of Kinboku-Kudu village in Mokwa, was taken into custody as a result of the investigation.
The suspect admitted to the incident during questioning, saying that he stopped the motorbike rider and killed him with a machete as they were traveling to Eppa Village.
“He stole the motorbike and left the corpse behind. Case being looked into at SCID Minna,” Wasiu stated.
According to the spokesperson, the defendant will be charged with culpable murder following the inquiry.
Mohammed, who admitted to the act and was chatting with newsmen, sobbed and said he did not know why he did it and that he did not want to die.
According to Wasiu, there was another development. The police were notified that two individuals, one Fatima Mohammed and the other unknown, had been sighted at a motor park in Ibeto. They were found in possession of an AK-47 rifle, two magazines, and fourteen rounds of live ammunition. Fatima Mohammed is from the Jamata area of Lokoja, Kogi State.
Police officers from the Ibeto Police outpost therefore gathered local vigilantes to the spot. Sadly, the unnamed individual and the aforementioned Fatima Mohammed were lynched to death by a vengeful mob prior to the police team’s arrival.
But as the bodies were being transported to Ibeto General Hospital, the AK-47 weapon with the live ammo was found. Research is being done.
According to the police, during a regular stop and search on the Kontagora-Lagos route on October 1st, police operatives from ‘B’ Division Kontagora discovered a sack bag that a passenger had left behind.
When the suspect saw the police squad, he turned tail and fled. Upon searching the bag, two dane guns and a single AK-47 rifle made locally were found. He stated, “More is being done to apprehend the suspect who is running.”
