Ado-Ekiti’s Ekiti High Court has sentenced 47-year-old Prophet Adeleye Akingbaso to life in prison for the rape of a 13-year-old girl.
Akingbaso was first brought before Justice Blessing Ajileye in September 2022 on two charges: compulsion and rape, according to what was understood.
According to Justice Ajileye’s decision, the defendant was found guilty on both counts of rape and coercion, and is so convicted.
This sentence, she said, will be a warning to others in similar situations who have not yet been brought to justice.
Taiwo Ajibulu, the prosecutor, told the court during the hearings that the acts took place at Ado-Ekiti in July 2022. In addition to raping the 13-year-old girl (name withheld), he described how the defendant forced her to have intercourse, seriously harming her physical and mental well-being.
Section 31(2) of the Child’s Rights Law, Cap. C7, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012, and Section 4 of the Ekiti State Gender-Based Violence (Prohibition) Law, No. 18 of 2019 were both broken, the prosecutor pointed out.
In order to support their case, the prosecution called four witnesses and provided the defendant’s statement as well as the victim’s medical report.
