At Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), the Nigerian Air Force officers apprehended a thief breaking into armoured cables that belonged to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
One of the three vandals was caught, while the other two escaped, according to a press release issued by Abdullahi Yakubu-Funtua, head of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection.
He asserts that there may be some connection between the vandals and those responsible for the recent vandalism of the runway lighting wires at the Lagos Airport.
The statement reads, “On July 21, 2023, at about 01:35 hrs, the guards on duty at the Nigeria Airforce HQ NADC gate halted three cable thieves along the airport road by NADC perimeter fence who were observed digging the FAAN underground armoured cable with the use of a digger, shovel, and cutlass.
“When they saw the guards, they started to retreat. However, a guard opened fire on them, aiming for Usman Musa’s shoulder. Usman Musa, a resident of Ijora, is 28 years old, a native of Adamawa State. After that, police detained him and took him to 661NAFH Ikeja.
“His other two accomplices fled, but he is currently getting treatment at General Hospital, Oyingbo. When Usman Musa has stabilised, a proper interrogation will take place.
The Murtala Muhammed International Airport, in Ikeja, had its runway lighting stolen, and the authority thinks that this occurrence can provide a useful lead in solving the case.
