Aribasoye emerges new Ekiti Assembly speaker

Adeoye Aribasoye, a former Chief Whip of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, has been elected speaker of the seventh assembly.

Aribasoye represents Ikole Constituency 2 in the 6th Assembly as chairman of the House Committee on Media and public affairs.

Aribasoye was unopposed at the house’s inaugural session on Tuesday, following the governor’s proclamation of the 26-member seventh assembly in accordance with the constitution.

In addition, Bolaji Olagbaju, a lawmaker from Ado-Ekiti constituency two, was elected unopposed as deputy speaker in the house with twenty-four All Progressives Congress (APC) members and two Social Democratic Party (SDP) members.

The nomination for the speaker was moved by Femi Akindele, representing Irepodun/Ifelodun constituency one, and seconded by his counterpart Lateef Akanle, representing Ekiti East 2.

Speaking, the new speaker thanked his colleagues and the APC leadership for their trust in him, promising to steer the legislative arm toward the overall development of the state.

Aribasoye, who was first elected to the House in 2019, stated that he would remain dedicated and committed to the legislative responsibilities of making laws, oversight, and support to the executive branch of government.

He praised Governor Oyebanji’s efforts since taking office, assuring him that the house would introduce legislation to help him achieve his six-point agenda for a prosperous state and socioeconomic development.

The speaker appointed Tolulope Ige (Ekiti South West 2) as the new majority leader, with Oluyomi Ayorinde, a lawmaker from Ido-Osi constituency two, as the deputy majority leader, as nominated by the APC.

Bosede Olowookere, a member from Efon, was elected chief whip, while Maryam Ogunlade, a member from Emure, was named deputy chief whip.

With only two members, the SDP chose Dele Ogunsakin from Ekiti East Constituency 1 as its minority leader.
