The petition asserted that in order for presidential candidates to be recognized as the election’s victor, they must receive 25% of the votes cast in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This claim was rejected by the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, which is based in Abuja.
There have been rumors that the tribunal’s chief justice, Justice Haruna Simon Tsammani, declared in a decision on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has no special status and is on par with the other states in Nigeria.
The decision was reached in response to a petition brought by the Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who contested President Bola Tinubu’s election. Tinubu didn’t receive 25% of the votes cast in the FCT, according to Obi, who stated that Tinubu should be banned from running for president.
