Using a sledgehammer, a security guard named Samuel Adeniyi is accused of hitting his lover Morolake Sunday in the head in the Lekki Phase 1 neighbourhood of Lagos State. He was remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre on Monday.

After Adeniyi, 33, appeared in court on one count of murder, Magistrate Patrick Nwaka of the Yaba Magistrate’s Court issued an order remanding him.

The incident happened on August 10, 2023, at No. 33, Audu Ekpa Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos State, according to police prosecutor Thomas Nurudeen’s testimony in court.

The defendant, according to the prosecutor, alleged that his partner was having extramarital affairs with other people and could never be sexually pleased.
In court, it was found that the deceased woman, a nanny, had left the child she was watching that day to meet with another man, claiming she was going to buy recharge cards.

Further information was provided, including the claim that Adeniyi waited for hours before coming back.
They got into a heated dispute that escalated into a brawl, and he accidently smacked her in the head with a sledgehammer when he was trying to question her about why it took her so long to return home.
When the deceased was taken to the Mainland General Hospital by her employers, a doctor on duty confirmed her death, according to Nurudeen, who testified in court that the defendant departed the scene while the deceased was taken there by her employers.

The charge stated: “That you, Samuel Adeniyi, did unlawfully kill one Sarah Morolake, aged 25 years, by hitting a sledgehammer on her head on August 10, 2023, at No. 33 Audu Ekpa Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos State, in the Lagos Magisterial District, and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 222 and punishable under Section 233 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2015.”

No plea was entered on behalf of the defendant.

In anticipation of the outcome of the legal counsel from the Directorate of Public Prosecution office, the Magistrate ruled that he be remanded in detention.

The case was postponed by Nwaka until October 10, 2023.
