The Director-General of UNRWA, which supports Palestine refugees, has warned that the agency will run out of gasoline in three days, endangering humanitarian efforts in Gaza, on Sunday.
“Water and operational bakeries and hospitals would not exist without fuel. Help won’t get to people in dire need without gasoline. Humanitarian assistance cannot exist without power.
“The people, women, and children of Gaza will not be further strangled by fuel,” he declared in a press release.
In the Gaza Strip, where more than two million people live, UNRWA is the biggest humanitarian organization.
Since the recent battles began on October 7, over a million people have been displaced; currently, over half a million of them are seeking shelter in its facilities.
We will fail the people of Gaza, whose needs are increasing by the hour, under our watch, Lazzarini warned, adding, “This cannot and should not happen.”
In an effort to keep humanitarian efforts from failing, he made a plea to all relevant parties and individuals to permit gasoline shipments into Gaza right away and to make sure they are strictly used.
Lazzarini emphasized the need for ongoing supplies even though he welcomed the first humanitarian convoy’s arrival in Gaza on Saturday, calling it “far from enough.”
Additionally, UNRWA released its most recent situation report on Sunday, revealing that seventeen staff members have been injured and thirteen more have died since the war started.
The UNRWA said that half of the dead were educators in a post on the social media site X, which was formerly Twitter.
According to the report, there have been 12 fatalities and close to 180 injuries among the displaced individuals taking refuge at UNRWA schools.
