Gunmen kill six in Taraba highway attack

Gunmen on Monday morning killed six people, including the driver of a commuter vehicle along the Takum -Wukari highway in Taraba.

It was gathered that the commuter vehicle departed Takum for Wukari around 6 a.m. and was ambushed at a village near Sai in neighbouring Benue state.

The Chairman of Takum LGA, John Ali, confirmed the incident to newsmen on Monday.

According to the Chairman, “I arrived in Jalingo yesterday for a meeting, but this morning I received a call about a tragic incident along the Takum-Wukari Highway.

Ali said five passengers and the driver were killed during the attack.

He narrated, “Five passengers left Takum around 6 a.m. and while approaching a village near Sai in Benue state, gunmen emerged from the forest and opened fire on the moving vehicle.

“The section of the road where the commuters were ambushed is untarred. The five passengers and the driver were killed.”

Ali said security operatives in the area had initiated patrols to track down the fleeing gunmen.

The State Police Command is yet to speak on the incident as at the time of filling this report.

In the meantime, the Taraba Independent Peace Committee has condemned the killing of six people on the Takum-Wukari road.

The Chairman of the organisation, Talla Ngarka in a statement in Jalingo condoled with the families of the victims.

Ngarka called on the Taraba and the Benue state governments to collaborate and end the spate of killings in the area.

Ngarka lamented the recent killing of the Gara of Chanchanji and called on stakeholders in the southern part of the state to close ranks and fight insecurity that has bedevilled the area which has affected the economic and social stability of the region.
