Dr Salihu Lukman, the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Vice Chairman for North West, has described the ruling party’s choice of Senator Abdullahi Adamu as National Chairman and Senator Iyiola Omisore as National Secretary as a “double tragedy.”
In a statement issued Wednesday, Lukman stated that Adamu, with the support of Omisore, has ensured that all higher organs of the party, except the National Working Committee (NWC), have been grounded.
He emphasised that in the case of the NWC, it was more a case of spoon-feeding members with convenient information, adding that when challenged, as in the court case aimed at restoring constitutional order in the party, the National Legal Adviser, Barr. Ahmed El-Marzuq, became handy with spurious legal interpretations, which are anything but legal and devoid of any logic.
“It is already a tragedy that two undeniably hardcore conservatives will be tasked with leading the APC as National Chairman and National Secretary,” he says. “How can a party that is supposed to be progressive have such a setback?”

Lukman accused Adamu and Omisore of making ethnic Northern arguments against the party’s zoning decisions, which were approved by the NWC.
He noted that one of the litmus tests would be whether President Bola Tinubu, having agreed with the APC NWC on the zoning formula for the leadership of the 10th National Assembly, would simply sit back and watch conservative right-wing elements within the APC use Northern ethnic arguments to mobilise against endorsed APC candidates for the leadership of the 10th National Assembly.
“The same conservative bloc is now spewing hardcore ethnic Northern arguments against the zoning decisions approved by the NWC as a result of consultations between Sen. Abdullahi Adamu-led NWC team and President Tinubu,” Lukman added. As if those consultations weren’t intended to produce agreements, once the NWC approved the recommendation for zoning the leadership of the 10th National Assembly, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, instead of acting as National Chairman, facilitating the implementation of party organs’ decisions, is acting as a factional leader opposing the NWC’s decision.”
He observed that, rather than working to ensure the success of the NWC decision by activating meetings of higher organs of the party to confer more legitimacy to the NWC decision, Adamu appears to be more interested in ensuring that the 2015 model of rebellious leadership emerges in the 10th National Assembly.
