Police Force on Edge as IGP Egbetokun Remains Past Retirement

Despite being past the statutory retirement age of 60, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun’s prolonged service is causing rising concerns within the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
There is internal dissatisfaction because Egbetokun has stayed in office despite the fact that some senior officials have been forced to retire owing to alleged age falsification and violations of service rules.
By officially retiring all of his classmates by March 3, 2025, Egbetokun replaced them with senior officers who were thought to be loyal to him.

Although the IGP zealously enforces retirement requirements on his subordinates, insiders in the police leadership are wondering why he has not resigned.
SaharaReporters was informed by a force insider that Egbetokun has privately acknowledged that he almost lost his job but was spared by First Lady Remi Tinubu, whom he is rumored to have close relations with.

“The First Lady stepped in just in time to save the IGP’s position.

A senior government official disclosed that he is now more self-assured than ever and is taking calculated actions to maintain his job.

To evict AIG Owohunwa, Egbetokun takes action.
Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Idowu Owohunwa is the most recent official to suffer under Egbetokun’s leadership. According to reports, the IGP views Owohunwa as a “archenemy” and a danger to his tenure.

After Owohunwa was unable to obtain a promotion to Deputy Inspector General (DIG), sources revealed that his resignation letter had already been drafted and was scheduled to be issued the following week.

By refusing to promote Owohunwa, the Police Service Commission (PSC) essentially sealed his doom.

Six new Deputy Inspectors General of Police (DIGs) were appointed by the PSC earlier this week to replace those who had lately been forced to retire by police authorities, according to reports.
