President Tinubu, Thank You for Betta Edu

I’ve been following the Tinubu Administration’s operations with bated breath since its beginning. As a Nigerian, whether I have political leanings or not, the actions and activities of the government in power influence me, hence I am engaged in the Tinubu administration’s success.

Like other Nigerians, I excitedly awaited the announcement of the ministerial list. Ministers have now been sworn in. Dr. Betta Edu, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, has captured my interest.

Her ethereal features, elegance, and charm automatically catch the eye, but almost immediately, you are made aware of her other outstanding traits, and you know that this is clearly one of the most inspired Ministerial choices made by President.

You’re dazed as you look over her CV. You marvel at her professional trajectory. To be honest, every other ancillary consideration for her nomination has vanished. She is a young lady. Yes, but individuals twice her age are still striving for half of what she has packed into her youth. She is, after all, a lady. Of course. It begins with gender identity and ends there. You dare not put her in a tokenistic box. She is a natural force who moves in sync with her surroundings. You have to pay attention when she walks in.

Since its creation, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs has received a terrible rap. For such a young Ministry, it has made a stir and left many with a bad taste in their mouth. Most of its declarations of job completion are received with disbelieving heckles and boos. The Ministry is burdened by a massive trust deficit.

This is the situation Dr. Edu has found himself in. She leaves no doubt that she came prepared. Since her inauguration, she has been making the rounds of media outlets, attempting to market her plans and refute some of the myths that have been pinned on the Ministry. Not an easy task. Enough to weigh down the faint-hearted, yet Dr. Edu is anything but. She is a genuine Amazon.

Watching her enthusiastically discuss the task ahead, there is little doubt that this Minister knows exactly what she came to do. This one will not wait to read Oga’s body language at the top. Dr. Edu will do it, and he will do it well.

I understand she has been on a retreat with her Directors and Department Heads for the entire week. What are you supposed to be doing? What have you done? What is keeping you from doing your job? I’ve heard it’s been a challenging session. I wish her directors all the best. If I were them, I would reject the famous Civil Service taciturnity, protectionism, and games in favour of this Minister. They all stand to benefit a lot from her success.

The problem is that the Dr. Edu I’m seeing does not appear to want you to fall in line. Otherwise, well…

All eyes are on you, Dr. Edu. Expectations are high. Hope rests on you. The youths. Women, as well as a variety of other groups. I will not ask you not to let them down. You don’t appear to be thinking about it. As a result, I will live you with a simple prayer. Godspeed.
