Rached Ghannouchi, the opposition leader in Tunisia, was sentenced to a year in prison by a Tunisian court.

The Ennahda party leader, a vocal critic of President Said Kaies, has been detained since last month after being arrested on suspicion of plotting against state security and incitement.

According to reports, Mr. Ghannouchi dismissed the allegations as politically motivated and refused to appear before the judges. He was sentenced in absentia on Monday.

Meanwhile, leading figures opposed to President Saied, who assumed full executive powers almost two years ago, have been arrested in a wave this year.
