Femi Falana (SAN), a human rights attorney, has urged the Federal Government to intervene immediately to ease Nigerians’ suffering as a result of the elimination of fuel subsidies.

On Friday night, Falana made the call while appearing on Politics Today on Channels TV.

He pointed out that the government’s recklessness and broken promises to reform the oil industry led to the current fuel subsidy regime.

Because of the Nigerian ruling class’s negligence, he said, “the government will have to act quickly to address the suffering of the people, undeserved pains inflicted on the people.”

The human rights attorney pointed out that Muhammadu Buhari, the recently outgoing president, broke his promise to fix all the refineries when he came into office in 2015.

Therefore, the human rights activist urged the Federal Government to act quickly to lessen the suffering of the populace.

The President Bola Tinubu announced that “fuel subsidy is gone” in his inaugural speech on May 29. This statement elicited a range of responses and increased the price of petrol nationwide.

Falana contends that considering how government policies will affect the populace is crucial when putting them into action.

“It’s obvious that those who initially supported the elimination of fuel subsidies are coming to understand the severity of the crisis that it has brought about for the nation. They are putting more pressure on the government, he said, to expedite the procedure for minimising the effects of the removal.

He also urged the FG to look into the long-standing fuel subsidy policy.
Without a doubt, there was a lot of fraud in the administration of fuel subsidies, and the government will need to look into that, he added.
